During my holliday on the lovely island of Corfu I could not resists to explore the occasional abandond house or buidling.

Before I leave, as I stare outside through the window, I wonder whether Cinderella once enjoyed the same view. There is still hope The histoy of this charming castle elludes me. It has certainly been abandoned for quite a while after the restaurant, the last function of the building, had to leave. The castle seems well worth the effort of a thorough rennovation. Although investers seem to be interested they face a burocratic wall of buildingcodes and environmental constraints. Or […]
So, where do you start to describe such a beautiful location? I guess I let the images taken in this abandoned castle do the bulk of the talking. Endless rows of books and cosy sofas I spend a glorious morning on a photo shoot in an abandoned castle in France and I cannot stop marveling at how well preserved the place still is. I wander through the rooms of the castle and find endless rows of books and countless cozy […]
Small The farmhouse is quite small and the cleaning lady has not been around for a longgg time… Still, the furniture in de living/dining room and 2 upstairs bedroom are great and patient photo subjects Horses The outbuilding are no longer there so the only reminders of the farmer life in this house are a pair of riding boots and a few other horse paraphernalia. Bedrooms The two bedrooms steal the show. One with its beautiful ocean-blue walls. The other […]
The institute As I approach the building I ponder on the possible roles this place has fulfilled in its lifetime. A note in the entrance hall suggest to me that it functioned as a re-socialization institute, offering struggling youngsters a second chance. Alternative scenarios are a rest home or possibly an orphanage since I do come across artifacts that suggest children have been here. Grand stairs One evident eye-catcher in this building are the grand stairs. They are littered with […]
Wheelchairs and steel beds Another gorgious location but ‘I’m glad I did not have to live here’ goes through my mind as I roam the halls and room. The steel beds and tiled cold floors give off an unwelcoming boarding school vibe. Wheel chairs are littered throughout the facility and, with the last occupant long gone, provide great photo opportunities. I gladly and humbly accept the challenge and get to work.
A soda bottelary End of story. Nothing to add here. The images speak for themselves.
Ballerina In an abandoned old print mill I meet Maree. Together we capture the beautiful harmony between classical ballet and the tranquility of an abandoned building. A couple of images were created at the Ballet studio Valentijn in Eindhoven (Netherlands) but most in this old, abandoned building. Hardcore It was a cold day and Maree had to hold challenging poses for longer periods. I did not make it very easy for her. Luckily for me ballerina’s are though and I […]
In an abandoned building in Belgium I find myself going back to school. I create images of stairwells, hallways and classrooms with chalkboards The school was build at the end of the 19th century and at its peak was ‘home’to 500 pupils. There used to be a chapel attached to the building but that unfortunately was destroyed early in the 21st century. Way back when While roaming the corridors, memories of crowded class rooms and strict teachers flash by. I […]
Mansion The mansion with the blue pram is a country house in cottage style. Build in 1928 and located on an estate the country house was called home by a Baron Barones and their family of 1 son and 4 daughters. One of the daughters lived on the estate until 1980 when she died, ending the dynasty. Decay beyond repair? The house has been abandonded since and chances of a viable renovation dwindle every year as decay progresses. From an […]
Italian Grandeur This former bathouse is still impressive and must have been a beautiful resting stop in its hay days. The place shows clear signs of decay and it is under renovation. Thats the beauty of ‘my job’, the ability to immortalize beauty before it dissapears forgood due to legislation or commercial influences. Roman pillars, Statues and Copper The main hall with its beatiful architecture, the copper bath and amazin ceilings are the obvious highlights but I make sure to […]
What a waste Every now and again I visit a place which seems to me worth saving. I’m surprised to find the place abandoned ‘because the economy wasn’t cooporating or no successors where found amongst the younger generation‘ ? who knows….. Belgisch hotel This abandoned Belgian hotel was such a place. Not in immediate or apparent decay . The walls amd decor where a wonderful pallette of colors and the few chairs, sofas and left behind China offered ample photo opportunities. […]
Love at first sight The house at the end of the driveway immediately captivates me. It’s old and covered in brushes and decay has definately set in. But the house still oozes a pleasant admosphere. Het huis aan het einde van de oprit boeit me onmiddellijk. Het is oud, ingevallen en bedekt met groen maar het ademt een mooie sfeer uit Blue lounge set One of the first rooms I encounter centerpieces a lovely old blue lounge set. Combined with the […]
900 years of history This castle in a small town in Northern France has its roots in the 12th century but up until the 19th century parts and floors have been added. Baron Of all its owners, the last one may very well have been the most exciting character judging by the size of the artillery piece in the salon. “He clearly lived before the wireless security camera era….“ Staircases and tricycles The building has several interesting architectual components as […]
Wow, what a beautiful location which has held back time very well. The dust and holes in the ceiling clearly show that the place has been empty for quite a while now. What a shame that no one is taking care of this place any longer. “What type of family tragedies need to happen for such a loverly place to be left ownerless?” I wonder. I capture picturesque images that blur the line between photos and paintings. When I’ve set […]
A short history lesson I like quessing what used to go on in the places I visit even more than I like actually knowing it. In this case the historic facts are very clear. This place was buil a monestary in the early 1900’s and used to house handicapt children at first. It remained a sanctuary for handicapt children even after the monks left in the years leading up to WW II. During WW II quite a few people unfortunately […]
In an abandoned prison in the centre of the Netherlands I capture the relative beauty of a building designed solely for efficiency and safety. Beauty can be found almost every where. In light, colours, patterns or composition. In this prison the light in particular brought a little sparkle to a place that undoubtedly has seen its fair share of sorrow and despair ” order_by=”sortorder” order_direction=”ASC” returns=”included” maximum_entity_count=”500″]
Somewhere in the Belgian countryside I visit an abandoned farm house. As so often in these locations, time has been frozen the moment the last inhabitant left the property for the final and last time. A news paper with yesterdays news. A made up bed and a partly set dining table tell their story in silence while the decay slowly progresses. The attic In the attic a lonely chair with an empty bottle suggests that ones the owner found a […]
Greek bakkery While enjoying the afternoon sun stroling the back alleys of a Greek harbor town, I notice an abandoned building that appears to have been a bakery. I’m trying to take a peek through the closed shutters when a man, who happens to be the owner greats me. We converse in an entertaining mix of Dutch, English and hand signals and I manage to get my desire to have a look inside accross. A few minutes late the owner […]
I love exploring islands in general, and small Greek islands in particular. The beautiful landscapes with endless olive orchards, row after row of grape vines and impressive mountain ranges, combined with the loverly wheather and endeering people make for some stunning photo locations. This small series of images created on the Greek island of Zakynthos capture, at least a little bit, the atnosphere that keeps calling me back to the islands, again and again. ” order_by=”sortorder” order_direction=”ASC” returns=”included” maximum_entity_count=”500″]
Well preserved Most artefacts have been removed from this small abandoned castle in Northern France. It was still an amazing place to create beautiful images. Big rooms with large windows and details in the finishing lets me as a visitor know that ones some affluent owners resided here. Fireplaces and Bathrooms The castle had to function, for most of its life anyway, without modern comforts like central heating. This means that fireplaces are to be found in nearly all the rooms. To […]
Judging by the amount of religious relics the last occupant of the house was a man of faith. Small is beautiful Besides those artifact, the house is still full of all sorts of reminders of those who used to live here. The ‘complex’ is no more than a small house and a stable but still well worth the attention. Frozen in time One day, quite a few years back by the looks of it, the last occupant had to leave. […]

Portugal One of my favorite destinations for relaxing and taking photographs is Portugal. Its often sunny which charges the body and mind an provides some welcome light into otherwise dark buildings in both the country side and mountain villages many abbandoned houses can be found. The younger generation has long ago moved to the cities and the last occupant of the structure is resting peacefuly under a beautiful marble tombstone in the local cemeteray. Hunter I chose to believe a […]
Light from above Somewhere in Central-France I visited this small, village church. he sun filled the majectic hall with light through stained glass windows creating an ever changing spectacle of lines and colors. I can’t help but take a few images to capture the moment.
In northern France I spend almost an entire day stroling around an abandoned military compound. The sun was out only ever so often so I needed to be patient to wait for the right lighting conditions. The compound was large consisting of over at least a doxen buildings. All where completely emptied, with militairy precision one could add….. Fortunately the structures, the rooms, the stairwells and some details presented adequate photo opportunities. Another lovely day well spend. ” order_by=”sortorder” order_direction=”ASC” […]
