About Iris

Welcome, and thank you for visiting my website.

Only me, my camera and the natural light. Nothing else.

My name is Iris van Heusden and I’m a photographer with a special interest in Urbex-photography.
Seeing the beauty and feeling emotions comes naturally to me. Capturing them in a 2-dimensional plane to convey the beauty to you, the viewer, is however quite challenging.
I try to do that by keeping it simple. Only me, my camera and the natural light. Nothing else.

“To me, photography is an art of observation. It’s about finding something interesting in an ordinary place… I’ve found it has little to do with the things you see and everything to do with the way you see them.” – Elliott Erwitt

Old, abandoned buildings, they fascinate me.

I love the decrepit beauty of a place that was once someone’s home or workplace and I can find beauty and meaning in everyday scenes. Colors or the lines and angles of light, they capture me. And objects like a chair, bed or a tricycle have withstood the test of time to tell me one last story. Sometimes these are beautiful, sometimes heart-breaking but without fail they are interesting.

Being sensitive to these stories, my imagination takes me back in time which helps me to capture these stories. I often feel humbled and sometimes a bit of a voyeur so I make sure to treat the place with respect. I’m grateful that I can visit for a moment to absorb the nostalgic beauty and sometimes sense that “somewhere up there”, an old gentleman or lady is smiling down at that strange blonde woman as she stumbles through the rubble in a house they once called home.

This website contains a lot of my work. I hope you can appreciate some of it so head over to the Portfolio page to enjoy a leisurely browse. If you feel lost you can try to find specific series either by filtering on Catagories (in the menu on the right) or use the images-tag-cloud to narrow your search.
